For construction work, these provisions come from CDM 2015 Schedule 2 in England, Wales and Scotland, and CDM 2016 Schedule 3 in Northern Ireland. Plan them before work starts and keep them available throughout the work.
Toilets that remain accessible and usable
Provide sufficient suitable toilets in readily accessible places. Keep them and their rooms clean, ventilated and lit so far as reasonably practicable. Separate rooms for men and women are required unless each toilet is in its own room that locks from the inside.
Include in the specification: Confirm the number and layout, safe routes, toilet paper, sanitary waste arrangements, cleaning and servicing. A weekly emptying visit does not replace cleaning between visits.

Washing with hot and cold, or warm, water
Washing facilities belong beside toilets and near required changing rooms. They must include clean hot and cold, or warm, water, with running water so far as reasonably practicable, cleaning products and a way to dry. Provide showers where the work or health risks require them.
Include in the specification: Choose a basin large enough for hands, face and forearms. Specify the heater, water supply and replenishment, soap and towels or dryers. Hand sanitiser alone is not a replacement for suitable washing facilities. Keep washing separate from eating and rest areas where hazardous substances could contaminate food.

Changing, secure storage and drying
Changing rooms are required where workers need special work clothing and cannot reasonably change elsewhere for health or propriety reasons. Provide seats, separate rooms or separate use by men and women where needed, and drying facilities where necessary. Provide secure storage for clothing and personal effects where needed.
Include in the specification: Allow for wet clothing and the number changing together. Keep contaminated protective clothing separate from ordinary clothes; specify lockers, seating and a safe drying arrangement.

What equipment should be included in the cabin?
Describe the users and the facilities already available. Choose the number of cabins from the agreed facilities and proposed layout.
Toilets and washbasins
Suitable toilets with nearby basins large enough for hands, face and forearms; clean hot and cold or warm water, soap and drying. A small cold-water hand-rinse basin is not a complete site washing arrangement.
Showers
Where showers are needed, specify how many people will use them at the same time, the hot-water supply and space to get changed.
Changing rooms
Simultaneous occupancy, lockers, clothing to store or dry, benches and circulation space.
To confirm the number of site facilities, consider the workforce, its distribution, the duration and working conditions. The welfare enquiry preparation tool gives guidance with its limitations. The price of a site cabin alone does not establish that it covers all your needs.
Spaces used by multiple teams
Men and women can use a shared toilet only when each toilet is in its own room that locks from inside, separate from any urinals. Hand, forearm and face washing can be shared. For showers, use separate facilities or a lockable room for one person at a time. Include sanitary waste disposal and access for the actual users.
Cabin with showers: check hot water and usage
The number of cubicles is not enough to describe the expected service. Indicate the times of use and site constraints to choose the equipment with the supplier.

Water heater, supply and capacity suited to the intended use.
Drainage and cleaning
Available network or collection solution, cabin ventilation, maintenance and frost protection to be organised.
Changing room cabin: count the furniture before choosing the floor area
Ask for a layout with the lockers and benches. It allows you to check the space for getting changed, the openings and circulation when several people are present.
Storage
Seats, secure storage and enough space to change. Keep contaminated protective clothing apart from everyday clothes; separate changing rooms or separate use may be needed for privacy.
Usage conditions
Wet clothes, need for drying, heating, ventilation and cleaning frequency.
Utilities and delivery: specify what already exists on site
Indicate the available water supply, drainage and electricity, their distance to the installation point and lorry access. Photos can help the supplier prepare the solution.
Available utilities
Get a quote for connections, necessary lengths, installation and commissioning. Specify who carries out each service.
Distant or absent utilities
Ask for a suitable solution: water storage, wastewater collection and access for servicing. Specify the capacity between water refills and tank emptying, and who provides those services.
Access and installation point
Gate, bends, slope, obstacles, manoeuvring space and offloading distance. Have the ground and the module supports validated.

- Interior layout: number of fittings, circulation space, doors and access suitable for users.
- Water and electricity supply details, hot water generation and waste drainage.
- If tanks are offered: capacity, conditions of use, frequency of servicing and emptying access.
Several configurations are possible. Request the technical specification of the chosen model and its up-to-date plan; the size of an office or another toilet cabin does not apply to all models.
Maintenance and collection: compare services from the start
Make sure every task and its price are allocated in the quote. Consumables, cleaning and any work on the tanks should match the intended use.
During use
Cleaning, consumables, equipment maintenance, tank emptying if needed and call-outs in case of breakdown.
On return
Collection date and access, cleaning required, inventory of condition and scale of charges for repairs or making good.

How much does a site toilet cabin cost to hire?
Request a quote for the actual toilets, washing, hot-water, shower or changing configuration and its servicing. There is no verified UK site toilet cabin price sample on this page.
Can you hire a site toilet cabin for one month?
Ask the hire company to confirm availability, the minimum billed period and actual delivery and collection dates. A contractual hire minimum does not change the need for welfare throughout shorter construction work.
Can you install a toilet unit without a mains connection?
Describe which services are not available and the planned duration. The supplier must specify the solution offered, its capacity between servicing visits, water supply and collection or tank emptying. Not all models are self-contained.
How many toilets and washbasins do I need on site?
Specify the number of people on site at the same time, their distribution, any facilities already accessible and site conditions. Agree suitable provision with the responsible contractor before ordering. The site welfare guide provides benchmarks and their limitations; the number of units is then determined from the agreed layout.
How much space should I allow for a site changing room?
Ask for a furnished layout showing the number of lockers, benches and circulation space needed for the users present at the same time. Also specify storage for work clothing, drying and cleaning requirements.
Can you buy a second-hand toilet or changing room unit?
Ask for the condition of the unit, equipment and installations to be specified. Request recent photos and add any necessary repairs, transport, installation and connections to the purchase price.
