Why does the price of a container vary from one seller to another?

Where do the differences between two prices come from?

• The departure depot. The displayed price is often an ex-depot price: a distant depot then means you pay for transport.
• The terminology. “New” and “one-trip” refer to containers that have been little or not used, but each seller uses their own term.
• The grade. A container advertised as wind and watertight, cargo worthy or sold as-is does not have the same price.
• The type of price. A “from” price is the entry-level price displayed by the seller; a price displayed without “from” may be a promotion.
• Options. Colour, lock, ventilation, extra doors.
• Quantity and timing. Discount on multiple units, stock available on the required date.

What is the price of a container delivered to my address?

The distance to the depot therefore matters in the final price: a more expensive offer but closer may work out cheaper once delivered. Always compare delivered prices, including VAT, for the same address.

New or one-trip

A unit offered as suitable for carrying cargo. Confirm its actual structural condition, inspection, current CSC examination status and acceptance by the intended carrier. A CSC plate alone does not establish seaworthiness; refurbishment is not implied by the grade.

Used wind and watertight

Used container advertised as wind and watertight, suitable for ground storage; this mention alone does not confirm its acceptance for export.

Used cargo-worthy

Used container advertised as cargo-worthy for carrying goods: ask for the inspections and documents specific to the unit, including the CSC plate.

Used refurbished

Used container that has been refurbished: ask for details of the work and when it was done (paint, seals, floor, steel panels).

Used sold as-is

Container sold without any stated watertightness: list the defects and cost the repairs before buying.

For storage, assess condition, watertightness and ventilation for your goods. For export, verify the actual unit's CSC approval, current examination status and carrier acceptance; the cargo-worthy label alone is insufficient. What affects the delivered price of a container?

1. Choose only the condition you need. A used wind and watertight container may suit storage after a condition and moisture-risk check; compare one-trip units where appearance matters.
2. Compare at least two delivered prices for the same size and the same condition category.
3. Aim for a depot close to you. The distance between the depot and your address affects the delivery price.
4. Combine delivery if you are buying several containers, and ask for it in the quote.
5. Have the price of the reserved unit confirmed. A “from” price is the entry-level price displayed by the seller, and a promotional price may change: ask for a written price.
6. Prepare access and offloading. Restricted access or unplanned lifting can cause extra costs or a failed delivery. Include access photos and agree any waiting or redelivery charges before ordering.
